The third largest island in the Mediterranean basin, Cyprus has been sought after by many empires and nations. It's tall mountains, lush valleys, and spacious beaches have drawn invaders seeking its strategic location and profitable resources. Cyprus holds a rich history with ties to several civilizations, the Mycenaeans and Phoenicians to name a few.
Today Cyprus is split between two governments. The Greek (and internationally recognized ) is under the leadership of President Nicos Anatasiadas and the Turkish government is under President Mustafa Akinci. In 1967 Turkey invaded Cyprus under the auspice of restoring order during the Cyprus Civil War. Thirty eight years later no peace or resolution has been reached. Greek residents of Cyprus still seek answers to the location of relatives that went missing during the Turkish invasion.
